KUCHING, Oct 27: The fourth edition of the Sarawak International Festival of Music and Arts (SIFMA4) is set to return on Dec 2 and 3, as announced by the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Ministry aims to establish SIFMA4 as a platform to cultivate an interest in performing arts among Sarawakians, similar to the performing arts events held in Europe, encompassing theater, musical performances, and more.

“We want to develop performances that can be appreciated by the audience. That’s why we have SIFMA. We aim to foster this culture in Sarawak,” stated Dato Sri Abdul Karim during a press conference today.

As the affluence of Sarawak’s societies grows, their entertainment expectations are changing. They may opt for movies, outdoor activities, and various forms of entertainment.

With the forthcoming completion of Sarawak’s performing arts center in about two and a half years, the region may start hosting opera, theater, musical performances, and various other forms of performing arts on a weekly basis.

“If we can have it every week, I would love to. But we have to start building this up, and that’s why we are collaborating with institutions like Sekolah Seni, Unit Budaya, Unimas, UITM, and private sectors, including the Majlis Seni Sarawak, to develop all these performing arts,” he added.

SIFMA4 will take place at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly’s (DUN) Hall on December 2 and 3. This edition will feature performances from troupes representing Thailand, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Singapore, West Malaysia, and local Sarawakian artists.
