KUCHING, April 7: Sarawak’s infrastructure push has received a significant boost with the approval of RM3 billion in alternative funding by the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to finance projects excluded from the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
In a post shared in DUN Bukit Saban social media, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas described the move as a strong vote of confidence by the State leadership in the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak), underscoring its proven ability to deliver critical projects efficiently for the benefit of communities statewide.
Uggah, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, said the additional funding comes at a crucial time as Sarawak ramps up efforts to strengthen connectivity and expand basic infrastructure.
Among the key initiatives is the large-scale takeover of abandoned and existing logging roads, which he characterised as a transformative step, particularly for rural and remote areas.
“Recently, the Premier approved RM3 billion in alternative funding for projects not included under RMK13 because he is confident in our ability to implement them,” he said during the JKR Sarawak Hari Raya gathering at Unifor Complex here on Monday (April 6).
He noted that while JKR Sarawak plays a pivotal frontline role in executing the State’s development agenda, its contributions often go underappreciated despite driving major improvements in Sarawak’s infrastructure landscape.
“JKR is at the forefront of development. At times, the recognition may not be as visible, but on behalf of the people, I thank you for the immense transformation you have brought to Sarawak’s infrastructure,” he said.
As Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, Uggah highlighted that a top priority moving forward is the acquisition and upgrading of logging roads.
The initiative is expected to significantly enhance the State’s road network, particularly in Miri, Kapit and several areas in the Second Division.
He acknowledged the scale and complexity of the undertaking, especially given the logistical challenges in remote regions, but stressed that it is essential to improve rural accessibility and stimulate local economic growth.
He added that JKR Sarawak’s track record in delivering projects remains a key factor behind the state government’s continued willingness to channel substantial funding to the agency, including for projects beyond federal allocations.
Uggah also called on all JKR personnel to remain united and committed in ensuring Sarawak achieves its broader development goals, including its aspiration to become a high-income region by 2030.
Also present at the event were Uggah’s wife Datin Amar Doreen Mayang, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo and Datuk Majang Renggi, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development Datu Chiew Chee Yau, and JKR Sarawak director Datu Ir Cassidy Morris. — DayakDaily
