KUCHING, April 14: The Sarawak government through the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak, has identified 10 river basins that are suitable for hydropower generation.

MUT minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi stated that the river basins that have been identified will be developed using the latest technology to make them a source of cascading hydropower, according to a news report from \Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).

“We will use new technology and approaches to develop our hydropower that uses river currents.

“We have identified 10 river basins to be developed and three of them have been submitted to the Sarawak government to be developed into a source of cascading hydropower,” he was quoted as saying in the news report.

Julaihi made the remarks when met by reporters during his Aidilfitri open house, which was held at his residence here earlier today.

The addition of hydropower is intended to fulfil Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision of producing 10 gigawatts (GW) of energy by 2030.

Ukas further reported that around 2pm, Abang Johari and his wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, visited Julaihi’s Aidilfitri open house.
