KUCHING, July 15: Phase 1 of the hydrogen hub development for Sarawak’s Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the development formed part of the country’s broader energy transition agenda under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which continues to be implemented in a structured and impactful manner.
In a post shared on his social media after chairing the National Energy Council Meeting today, he said public transport electrification projects were progressing according to plan, including the deployment of 250 electric buses and the expansion of 800 kilometres of rail network coverage.
“Malaysia had also made progress in increasing its renewable energy capacity, with installed Renewable Energy (RE) capacity reaching 31 per cent as of December last year, as the country works to reduce its reliance on coal.
“The transition towards cleaner energy sources has been further supported through the successful implementation of the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), which is now equipped with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS),” he said.
The meeting was attended by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof.
In the transport sector, Anwar said the implementation of Biodiesel B15 was helping the country move towards greater use of sustainable alternative fuels, with further support expected from the PETRONAS biofuel hub in Pengerang.
He stressed that Malaysia must remain prepared to safeguard long-term energy security amid continuing geopolitical uncertainties and global supply disruptions.
“As such, the government will study the need and strategies to establish a national petroleum stockpile as a measure to strengthen the country’s resilience,” he added. — DayakDaily
