KUCHING, July 16: A 13-year-old girl was killed while a 14-year-old boy was rescued and taken to hospital following a fire that engulfed a double-storey terraced house in Tupong Ulu early this morning.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Petra Jaya, along with assistance from Tabuan Jaya Station, responded to the emergency at Lorong 5 Permai Jaya at 2.23am.
According to Bomba, the fire involved a permanent two-storey terraced house and had destroyed approximately 70 per cent of the structure, affecting an area measuring about 20 by 40 square feet.
Initial reports indicated that two individuals were trapped inside the burning house. Firefighters immediately launched an offensive interior rescue operation, entering the smoke-filled building to locate and evacuate the victims.
Both victims were successfully brought out of the house by rescuers. Firefighters administered initial emergency treatment at the scene while awaiting the arrival of medical personnel from the Ministry of Health.
The 14-year-old boy survived the incident and was transported by ambulance to hospital for further treatment. However, the 13-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene by Ministry of Health personnel.
The fire was brought under control at 3.14am and the operation concluded at 3.40am.
After the scene was declared safe, the victims were handed over to health authorities and the police for further action. — DayakDaily
