Sarawak gov’t gives RM1.89 mil to 35-door Rumah Mawang, Tatau to rebuild longhouse

KUCHING, Sept 20: Residents from 35-door Rumah Mawang longhouse in Tatau receives a total of RM1.89 million financial assistance from Sarawak government to rebuild the longhouse after it was destroyed by fire incident in 2018.

According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today, Assistant Minister of Native Laws and Customs Datuk John Sikie Tayai said among the assistance given were a total of RM420,000 (RM12,000 for each door) which was collected from the Timber Cess Fund, while another 21-doors of the longhouse also received a total of RM1.47 million assistance (RM70,000 for each door) under the Sarawak Disaster Fund.

“In total, the assistance received by the residents of Rumah Mawang for the construction of their longhouses is RM1.89 million,” he told reporters after visiting Rumah Mawang in Nanga Takan Ulu Anap of Tatau, on Sunday (Sept 19).


In 2018, Rumah Mawang longhouse was completely destroyed in a late night fire incident. Following that, the residents of the longhouse built two longhouses, namely Rumah Mawang and Rumah Andrew.

On the same note, the Kakus assemblyman said Sarawak government also provided a similar assistance to the residents of Rumah Micheal China and Rumah Sengalang in Tatau.

“The Sarawak government also provided a total of RM700,000 to 10-doors of Rumah Micheal China residents, and RM770,000 to the 11-doors of Rumah Sengalang residents,” he added. – DayakDaily.
