Sarawak govt approves expansion project of St Mark’s Church, Batu Kawah

KUCHING, May 2: Sarawak Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian says Sarawak Planning Authority (SPA) has approved the five-phase expansion project of St Mark’s Church at Batu Kawah which is costing RM20 million.

During a fundraising jogathon for the church which aimed to raise RM5–6 million for phase 1 yesterday, Dr Sim who officiated at the event called on all and sundry to help with the fundraising.

“It’s not about the amount, but every effort of love for our St Mark’s,” said Dr Sim who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman.

He expressed gratitude for various places of worship for different faiths in Batu Kawah which has been growing in tandem with Batu Kawah’s progress which also make the constituency a livable place where residents may work, relax and enjoy.

Meanwhile, Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Simon Poh said Batu Kawah has developed much since St Mark’s Church was built in 1999.

“And with more Catholics coming to church, we will need to improve the services and facilities.

“I trust that this fundraising jogathon will contribute towards the new building for living quarters of priests, rooms and a hall for the physical, moral uplifting and spiritual formation of the community here,” said Poh. — DayakDaily
