Sarawak govt announces two-day state mourning in memory of Tun Taib

Two days of mourning (Feb 21 and 22) have been declared as tribute to the late former Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

KUCHING, Feb 21: The Sarawak government has declared two days of mourning (Feb 21 and 22) to pay tribute to the late former Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

All official functions involving entertainment events must be postponed, and Sarawak flags are to be flown at half-mast.

“Mosques and houses of worships are encouraged to hold prayer ceremonies in remembrance of Tun Taib,” the statement said today.


The longest serving chief minister of Sarawak passed away at 4.28am at the Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur hospital (CVSKL) today. He was 87.

His body is expected to arrive in Kuching from Kuala Lumpur this afternoon and will be brought back to his residence at Demak Jaya, Jalan Bako.

The body will lie in state at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex tomorrow (Feb 22) before he is laid to rest at the Demak Cemetery following the Zohor prayers.

A ceremony for the public to pay their last respects will be held at the DUN Complex tomorrow from 8am to 11.30am.

Following that, the body will be taken to Masjid Demak at 12 noon for prayers. — DayakDaily
