KUCHING, Aug 10: The Sarawak government has allocated RM25 million in special financial assistance aimed at empowering Sarawakian women entrepreneurs.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the fund will be managed by Affin Bank and is designed to help women entrepreneurs expand their businesses.

“This financial assistance will also enable women involved in the handicraft industry to market their products internationally,” said Abang Johari during the Sarawak Women’s Day Celebration 2024, which was streamed live via the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) Facebook page.

The Premier emphasised that the fund is specifically for Sarawakian women, who can apply for loans from Affin Bank to support and grow their businesses.

In addition to the RM25 million allocation, Abang Johari also announced the continuation of the Women’s Empowerment Capital Grant, which provides RM2.5 million to the Sarawak Women and Family Department (JKWS).

This grant aims to further support women’s economic participation and development in the state.

He highlighted that Sarawakian women have the capability to create innovative products from local biodiversity, but often face challenges with securing the necessary capital.

“So today, I announce that, upon request from the Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, we will continue the empowering fund of RM2.5 million,” he added.

The initiative underscores the Sarawak government’s commitment to fostering women’s entrepreneurship and economic empowerment in the region. — DayakDaily
