Sarawak Governor launches BorneoCraft Global Expo and Conference 2024

KUCHING, Nov 27: Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has launched the inaugural BorneoCraft Global Expo and Conference (BCG) 2024 today.

The event, held at Kuching Waterfront, aims to elevate Sarawak’s craft industry and position the State as a global hub for arts and culture.

The event was also graced by Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin, whose support and passion for the arts and culture further inspired the organisers and participants.

In his address, Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah emphasised the importance of positioning Sarawak as a leading craft tourism destination.

“Our vision for Sarawak is to create a thriving ecosystem that enhances and promotes the craftsmanship of our local artisans.

“With this expo, we not only aim to elevate the standards of craft but also to foster collaboration and innovation among artists, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders.

“We believe that by working together, we can nurture a vibrant environment where creativity flourishes and where our crafts can compete globally,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Snowdan Lawan, who is the organising chairman of BCG 2024, announced the launch of the MasterCraft Challenge, an initiative designed to discover and promote exceptional talent within Sarawak’s craft communities.

BCG 2024 will be held until Dec 1, showcasing a diverse array of traditional and contemporary crafts, including intricate weaving, masterful wood carving, and elegant pottery.

The event will also feature a series of informative workshops and inspiring masterclasses, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and cultural exchange among artisans and enthusiasts.

As a highlight, a Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) attempt for the largest gathering of beadmakers making beaded crafts, will be held at The Spring shopping mall on Dec 1, at 2pm.

Also present were Sarawak Governor’s wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Speaker’s wife Puan Sri Datin Amar Fatimah Iskandar, and Snowdan’s wife Datin Melinda Claudia Bucking-Lawan. — DayakDaily
