KUCHING, Jan 5: Sarawak’s General Operations Force (GOF) successfully seized contraband cigarettes and liquor worth over RM3 million during “Op Taring Alpha” in the city last Friday (Jan 3).
Sarawak Brigade GOF Commander SAC Che Ghazali Che Awang reported that a raid on a premises uncovered 1,777 cartons of white cigarettes, 695 cartons of kretek cigarettes, 11,732.5 litres of beer, and 2,137.9 litres of various brands of liquor, totalling RM3,023,488.75, according to Bernama.
It was also reported that two local women, aged 30 and 33, were arrested during the operation.
The suspects and the seized goods were handed over to the Kota Samarahan District Police Headquarters for further investigation under Section 135(1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.
In a separate update, Che Ghazali shared that in 2024, the Sarawak Brigade GOF carried out 287 raids, leading to 630 arrests and deportations, with seizures valued at RM83.3 million.
He noted that the arrests included 154 locals and 121 foreigners, with 355 foreigners attempting to enter Sarawak through illegal border routes being deported. All individuals involved in these activities were from Indonesia.
Among the seized items were smuggled cigarettes worth RM25.6 million, contraband liquor valued at RM6.9 million, smuggled diesel at RM1.2 million, vehicles worth RM14.2 million, and other goods totalling RM35.4 million. – DayakDaily
