Sarawak flood victims up 1,823, Serian highest number of evacuees

KUCHING, Jan 29: Relentless rainfall continues to trigger flash floods across Sarawak, displacing 1,823 individuals, with Serian having the highest number of evacuees.

As of the time of writing, approximately 941 evacuees are housed at 15 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in Serian.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the number of flood victims in Serian could be higher as information on the number of victims in the five Serian-area PPS are still in the process of being updated.

It also noted that 34 PPS are now in operation across Sarawak to accommodate victims of the flood and landslide disasters.

In the Bintulu division, five PPS have been opened with the PPS Rumah Steven Jeli accommodating 34 victims, 109 victims placed at the BDA Kidurong Sports Center, while three other PPS, namely PPS Balai Raya Jepak, PPS Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jepak, and PPS Stadium Muhibah, are still awaiting the latest information on the number of victims.

On the southern side of Sarawak, Kota Samarahan and Kuching divisions have opened up seven PPS, involving PPS Dewan Mesra Simunjan (76 victims), PPS Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Lutong Sebangan (10 victims), PPS SK Endah Samarahan (29 victims), PPS Balai Raya Kampung Nangka (eight victims), PPS Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Chung Hua Batu Kawa (191 victims), PPS Dewan Pangkalan Bau (18 victims), and PPS Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Kranji (11 victims).

The Miri and Sibu divisions each opened four and two PPS respectively.

In Miri, the PPS Pusat Bulan Sabit Merah is currently housing six flood victims, PPS Kampung Pujut Kampung Batu housing 85 flood victims, and PPS SMK Suai housing 41 victims, while the number of victims at PPS Kampung Sukan Petronas is still awaiting the latest information.

In Sibu, the number of victims at the Dewan Penghulu Seribu Nanga Tada Kanowit and SK Bukit Arip PPS is still unknown.

A PPS has been opened in Miri, namely the Red Crescent Centre, to shelter 109 evacuees who were affected by the landslide incident.

Meanwhile, PPS Dewan Datuk Aaron Bawan Kanowit is still operating and housing the victims of the recent fire disaster in Sibu. – DayakDaily
