KUCHING: ‘Tegkang’, a film depicting life in the Bario highlands of Sarawak, won the Special Jury Award at the ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards (AIFFA) 2025 Gala Night held at Pullman Hotel here last night, sharing the honour with Brunei’s ‘Waiters’.
The award was accepted by director Josh Nawan and actress Michelle Lungan.
The jury praised ‘Tegkang’ for its “special or unique depiction of how physical blindness does not mean darkness, even in a remote rural setting where urban inconveniences cease to exist.”
Meanwhile, ‘Waiters’ was recognised for highlighting the perseverance and growth of Brunei’s film industry despite local challenges.
Speaking to reporters after the Awards ceremony, Michelle, the Kelabit-born beauty, said the win came as a surprise.
“During the opening night, they didn’t even mention any nominations for ‘Tegkang’. Then suddenly, while we were having dinner, they announced the Special Jury Award — and there it was.
“It was a bit confusing at first, but so exciting,” she said.
Michelle described her most memorable moments on set as the camaraderie with the cast and crew.
“A lot happened during shooting, and we really had to make it work.
“‘Tegkang’ doesn’t have many references out there; it’s something new. We weren’t even sure what to expect for the outcome, so everything is unforgettable,” she added.
On the other hand, Josh, a proud Sarawakian, said the recognition was meaningful.
“Being recognised by the audience is one thing, but being acknowledged by the jury means a lot. They’ve been ahead of us, done the journey before us, and yet they gave us a thumbs up.
“This isn’t the end of our journey, but the start of a new adventure,” he said.
