SEMATAN, May 7: Sarawak is set to field a strong contingent in its bid to defend its overall championship title at the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, said a total of 1,158 athletes, coaches, team managers and officials will represent Sarawak in the Games, scheduled from Aug 15 to 24.
“This large contingent reflects Sarawak’s strong determination and unwavering commitment to ensuring a solid and highly competitive presence at the nation’s premier sporting event,” he said during the closing ceremony of the Champion Camp and the launch of the 100-Day Countdown to SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026, held at Putra Sentosa Retreat Camp on Wednesday night (May 6).
The ceremony was officiated by Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Gerald said the Champion Camp, conducted in two phases, successfully brought together hundreds of athletes across multiple sports as part of efforts to strengthen the State’s overall preparation and performance.
He added that the programme is more than just a training initiative, serving instead as a platform to develop athletes who not only excel in performance but also embody integrity, discipline, and the fighting spirit of “Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban”.
On the 100-day countdown period, he described it as a crucial final phase for the Sarawak contingent to sharpen strategies, elevate performance levels, and intensify preparations to achieve their best results at the Games.
“We hope the Sarawak contingent will deliver an outstanding performance and carry the pride and fighting spirit of the state at SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026,” he said.
He also highlighted that Sarawak’s success at SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 demonstrated the athletes’ capability, discipline, and competitive spirit at the highest level.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan, acting chief executive officer of Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) Khairul Nizam Morshidi, and other dignitaries. — DayakDaily
