KUCHING, July 3: The Sarawak contingent has set its sights on achieving up to 75 gold medals at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 in Selangor, which is to be held from August 15-24.
According to Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development and the Chef de Mission of the Sarawak contingent for Sukma Selangor 2026, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, while the majority of the athletes representing Sarawak are newcomers, based on their preparation and commitment, he is confident they could achieve the target.
“I wouldn’t say this if I wasn’t confident. Although about 70 per cent of our athletes are newcomers, based on their preparation and commitment, I am confident we can achieve this target,” he told reporters after officiating the Sarawak Shogun Workshop programme here today.
According to him, preparations will now shift towards competition strategy once the event draw is completed, as the results will determine the competition schedule and each team’s planning.
“Tonight, the athletes will be shortlisted, and the event draw will be held on July 9. There are several categories that may be dropped due to insufficient participation.
“After the draw, we will assess the competition schedule and formulate the best possible strategy,” he said.
He also reminded athletes, coaches and team managers to make full use of the remaining 43 days to strengthen their strategies and team spirit. — DayakDaily
