KUCHING, Aug 9: Sarawak is exploring seawater purification technology as a potential option to meet its future water supply needs, with Singapore among the parties involved in the discussions, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking to reporters after officiating the 18th Triennial General Assembly of the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) in Sibu today, he said the technology was already available and Sarawak would continue to monitor developments as it assessed its future water requirements.
“There is already technology capable of purifying seawater. We will monitor the progress of these discussions according to future water supply needs.
“This matter is not yet finalised because we are still at the exploratory stage,” he said.
Abang Johari said the discussions with Singapore also covered carbon-related cooperation, including carbon storage and trading activities in line with commitments under the Paris Agreement.
He noted that Singapore, as a rapidly developing country, generates carbon dioxide emissions and therefore has an interest in carbon trading as part of efforts to address its emissions.
“So, this means they want to look for a market based on carbon trading. This is guided by the Paris Agreement to address the country’s carbon emissions,” he said. — DayakDaily
