KUCHING, Aug 23: Sarawak’s eRacing team has secured a historic silver medal on the third day of the eSports competition at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI), held at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus here yesterday (Aug 22).

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, the dynamic duo, consisting of Muhammad Hamdany Abdul Hamid, 21, and Jeff Qi Rui Tan, 14, marked a historic achievement by winning Sarawak’s first-ever silver in the eSports category.

Perak’s team, represented by Abdul Yazid Imran Abdul Razak and Muhammad Hasif Zainal Abidin, clinched the gold medal, while Melaka’s team, comprising Aisy Amani Zikry Azmi and Muhammad Hakim Suhaimi, earned the bronze.

The intense 45-lap Double Team Race, held at the Sepang Grand Prix circuit, lasted a grueling one hour and 30 minutes.

Hamdany made a strong start, overtaking Perak to lead for 12 laps. However, a pivotal moment came during a pit stop for a driver change, allowing Perak to regain the lead as Jeff Qi Rui Tan took over driving duties.

With just 22 minutes left in the race, Sarawak took a strategic risk, staying out on the track to claim pole position as Perak headed into the pits for their final driver swap.

Despite Sarawak’s bold effort, a late pit stop on Lap 34 handed the lead back to Perak.

Although the Sarawak team held on to second place, they were unable to close a 14-second gap before the race ended.

The medal ceremony for all eSports events will take place on Aug 24. — DayakDaily
