Sarawak Energy renders assistance to Uma Sambop longhouse fire victims

KUCHING, July 22: Sarawak Energy provided relief assistance through food aid and essential supplies to the villagers of Uma Sambop in Long Semutut in Belaga following a recent fire that destroyed their 86-door longhouse.

In a media release today, Sarawak Energy said its team immediately arranged for the supplies to be distributed among the families from the 86 affected households.

Uma Sambop Asal’s longhouse chief Maren Uma Matu Lian and Uma Sambop Batu Pilau’s longhouse chief Maren Uma Catherine Bungan were on site to receive the assistance.


Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication who is also Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang, Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, and Belaga District Officer Juan Ubit were also present to witness the handing-over of the assistance.

The team offloading the relief supplies to be distributed among the villagers.

On July 12, Uma Sambop longhouse and a church were razed to the ground in a fire at about 3.30pm that left some 680 villagers homeless.

A team of 10 firefighters from Belaga Fire Station took one hour and 30 minutes to reach the scene about 69km away.

The fire was brought under control at 7pm with more than 10 personnel from the Uma Daro volunteer firefighters team from Sungai Asap also helping in the operation.

No injuries were reported in the incident. — DayakDaily
