Sarawak Energy recognised for environmental initiatives in Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Awards

KUCHING, Feb 28: Three of Sarawak Energy’s facilities were recognised for their environmental initiatives and conservation efforts at the recent Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award (PMHA) for 2019/2020 at a virtual event ceremony on Feb 25.

According to a press release, during the ceremony, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, in his speech, emphasised that there must be a concentrated efforts by stakeholders, the government, industry players, academicians and the public to improve and facilitate sustainable living.

“Industrialisation in Malaysia needs to be environment-friendly with a sustainable consumption and production approach,” Muhyiddin added.


Sarawak Energy’s Mukah Power Generation, Murum Hydroelectric Plant and Bakun Hydroelectric Plant all received Notable Achievements in Environmental Performance at the event.

Sarawak Energy’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Datu Sharbini Suhaili delivered his remarks in receiving the award on behalf of the corporation, now Malaysia’s largest renewable energy provider.

Sharbini noted: “This is the first time that we have participated in the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Awards and we are honoured to receive Notable Achievements in Environmental Performance for our three generation facilities.

“Sarawak Energy takes multiple approaches in our projects and operations to enhance environmental quality through management, awareness and conservation initiatives. This minimises any negative impact on the environment by creating a high level of environmental awareness and compliance through collaborations with the relevant authorities and stakeholders.

“Recognition of our efforts via the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award, will motivate us to do even better and it is a good opportunity to benchmark ourselves against the best companies in Malaysia in environmental stewardship,” he concluded.

The Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Awards is jointly organised by three Malaysian private sector non-profit organisations concerned with corporate environmental management and performance, namely Environmental Management & Research Association of Malaysia (ENSEARCH), Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MICCI) which is endorsed by the Ministry of Environment & Water Malaysia and supported by the Department of Environment (DOE) Malaysia as well as private sectors.

It publicly recognises various business and industry environmental accomplishments and leadership which serves to create environmental awareness. The awards aims to assist enterprises in identifying areas for improvement in environmental management and facilitates capacity building and development of partnerships to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements and global environmental challenges. — DayakDaily
