Sarawak Energy, Gentari and UAE’s Masdar to explore world’s largest 1GW floating solar project at Murum Dam

KUCHING, Nov 5: The Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (PJSC), known as Masdar, a state-owned clean energy provider in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has partnered with Sarawak Energy and Gentari to explore the potential for constructing one of the worldā€™s largest floating photovoltaic (PV) solar projects at Murum Dam.

This project is expected to have a capacity of up to one gigawatt (GW).

According to a news report by TVS, the joint research agreement was formalised at an event in Abu Dhabi today, witnessed by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Sarawak Energy was represented by its Group chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, while Masdar was represented by its CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, and Gentari by its CEO, Sushil Purohit.

Notably, Gentari is a subsidiary of Malaysiaā€™s PETRONAS Group.

This project, to be implemented at the Murum Dam in Belaga, Kapit Division, has the potential to significantly impact the renewable energy sector in the region.

Furthermore, it reflects the commitment of all three parties to lead sustainable energy solutions while leveraging Sarawakā€™s natural resources to promote the global use of renewable energy.

Earlier, during an official working visit to Abu Dhabi, the Sarawak delegation led by Abang Johari also visited Masdar City, renowned for being powered by the worldā€™s first solar energy.

The delegation included Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Minister of Utilities and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni. ā€” DayakDaily
