KUCHING, April 9: Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) is considering taking legal action against a contractor for negligence during excavation works which allegedly caused a power outage in certain Kuching areas on April 5.

According to a Sarawak Energy statement, the incident happened due to the contractor overlooking safety and failing to contact the utility provider before commencing excavation works, thereby endangering public safety and infrastructure.

A recent incident in Lawas was cited as another example of contractor negligence.

As of now, the works related to the area has been halted until improved precautionary measures are implemented.

Sarawak Energy emphasised the need for vigilance, monitoring worksites closely, conducting effective coordination between main contractors and subcontractors to prevent any similar accidents and ensure safety.

The major power outage took place in Malihah and Batu Kawah areas at 11.25am on April 5 (Friday), with Sarawak Energy’s technical team arriving on scene to restore power within the hour despite severe damage to cables, joints, and circuits. Full repair works were concluded on April 6 (Saturday) at 10.30am. — DayakDaily
