KUCHING, March 23: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) will assist the fire victims in Kampung Haji Baki in rebuilding their homes.

According to Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang in a statement today, RM70,000, approved by Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, is given to each victim whose house was destroyed.

He said the amount was given based on the value of one of the houses, and the Sarawak government will also assist in repairing other houses that were partially damaged in the incident.

Yesterday (March 22), four houses were destroyed while four others were damaged in a pre-dawn fire incident at Kampung Haji Baki.

Lo added that the four families whose houses were razed were also given RM250 each in rental assistance from the Housing Commission.

He said the assistance (RM50 paid by the victims, RM200 from the Sarawak government) is given for the duration of the period while their house is being reconstructed until it is completed.

He also said the fund was given to each victim based on the value of the houses, and the Sarawak government will assist in repairing those houses that are partially damaged.

Among others who contributed assistance to the victim are the Sarawak Welfare Department, Yayasan Sarawak, Civil Defense Force (APM), and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Batu Kitang Youth team. — DayakDaily
