KUCHING, Aug 14: Sarawak strengthened its bilateral investment and industrial partnership with Chinese companies with the signing of five agreements covering intelligent construction, energy storage manufacturing, basalt fibre production, mineral development and oil and gas services during the State’s Investment Mission to Shanghai on Thursday (Aug 13).
The agreements were exchanged at a ceremony witnessed by Deputy Premier and Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, reflecting growing interest among Chinese businesses in establishing a presence and expanding their operations in Sarawak.
Among the agreements, FAME International Construction Technology Sdn Bhd signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Chongqing Intelligent Construction and Construction Robotics Industry Center to jointly develop Malaysia’s intelligent construction market.
Torch Energy Storage Technology Sdn Bhd also entered into a factory construction agreement with Acute Iconic Sdn Bhd to develop a 150,000-square-foot energy storage manufacturing facility at Samajaya Hi-Tech Park in Kuching.
Meanwhile, EcoNature New Material Technology Sdn Bhd signed an agreement with Pawoke Mineral Fiber Products Group Co Ltd to establish a basalt fibre manufacturing facility in Sarawak.
Tecktonic Minerals Sdn Bhd signed two separate memoranda of understanding (MoUs) — one with Sound Achiever Limited for a mineral development project, and another with Shanghai Richtech Technology Company Limited to establish a fully localised oil and gas exploration and services entity in Sarawak.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Awang Tengah said the agreements demonstrated the growing collaboration between the business communities of Sarawak and China, while highlighting strong Chinese investor interest in the state.
The morning programme also featured the Sarawak–China Strategic Investment Roundtable, which explored investment opportunities in advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, the digital economy and green technology.
Discussions also focused on potential technology transfer involving Chongqing investors in areas including smart infrastructure, robotics, artificial intelligence, the circular economy and high-performance computing.
The engagements underscored Sarawak’s strategic position as a gateway to ASEAN and its efforts to attract high-quality investments that support sustainable development, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, digitalisation and technological innovation.
The Sarawak government also highlighted its continued investment in large-scale infrastructure, competitively priced utilities and industrial land as part of efforts to strengthen the State’s long-term competitiveness as an investment destination.
Eligible projects completed within stipulated timeframes are also entitled to a 30 per cent rebate, further supporting investor confidence and competitiveness.
Awang Tengah said Sarawak welcomed partnerships with Chinese enterprises that could contribute to the State’s industrial development, strengthen local value chains and create high-value employment opportunities for Sarawakians.
The Sarawak delegation also met chief executives from 10 technology companies, including Hörmann Group, BMW Group, ZF Automotive and Space Green Energy Investment Inc.
He was accompanied by Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, State Financial Secretary and senior government officials from MINTRED, the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, InvestSarawak and SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd, as well as representatives from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) Shanghai.
The investment mission forms part of Sarawak’s continued efforts to deepen international economic relations and strengthen its position as a competitive investment destination within the ASEAN region. — DayakDaily
