KUCHING, Aug 14: Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad has contributed RM692,000 in business zakat for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2025, to Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) as part of the banking institution’s ongoing commitment to the development of the Muslim community in Sarawak.
According to a report from the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), the zakat contribution was presented by Bank Islam Group Shariah Supervisory Council chairman Dr Muhamad Fuad Abdullah to Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) president Datuk Misnu Taha, witnessed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex in Petra Jaya here today.
Bank Islam Group Chief Shariah and Sustainability officer Mohd Nazri Chik said the zakat payment reflected Bank Islam’s continued commitment to the Sarawak community since it began operating in the State in 1984.
He said the year-on-year increase in zakat payments was also influenced by the continued support of Sarawakians for Bank Islam and the expansion of Islamic banking operations in the State.
Additionally, he said the meeting with the Sarawak Premier also discussed potential cooperation between Bank Islam and the Sarawak government to strengthen the waqf sector.
He said Bank Islam welcomed the establishment of Yayasan Wakaf Sarawak last year as a new entity alongside TBS and was ready to support the State government’s efforts to expand waqf development.
“The intention is for Bank Islam to work with the Sarawak government to develop flagship projects that not only benefit the people of Sarawak but also encourage waqf to move beyond being an instrument for developing mosques, burial grounds and the like, and instead create a greater economic impact for the people,” he said when met by the media after the zakat presentation ceremony.
Also present was Bank Islam chief of staff Mohamed Iran Moriff Mohd Shariff.
Meanwhile, in a separate Ukas news report, Abang Johari also received a courtesy call from the Wanita Harakah Islamiah (Hikmah).
“The Sarawak Premier welcomed the various activities carried out by Wanita Hikmah and suggested that cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government departments be strengthened to empower women throughout Sarawak in the areas of welfare, the economy and education,” said its chairperson Toh Puan Hayati Ahmat after the courtesy call.
She added that Wanita Hikmah currently has 12 branches and runs 23 majlis taklim, involving women in local communities, in addition to implementing various programmes across Sarawak.
Among the organisation’s main focuses were developing women leaders from the grassroots, strengthening volunteerism, and reinforcing family institutions through parenting and family knowledge programmes.
The efforts also extend to rural communities through visits to the sick and underprivileged families, as well as holistic religious outreach and welfare programmes.
She also expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Premier for his support in helping Wanita Hikmah continue its programmes, activities, and women’s development agenda throughout the State.
Also present were Wanita Hikmah deputy chairperson Dr Fatimah Bujang and Wanita HIKMAH adviser Professor Dr Dayang Afizah Awang. — DayakDaily
