KUCHING, Aug 31: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen has called on the Sarawak government to actively engage with airline companies to reduce the exorbitant flight ticket prices that burden Sarawakians, particularly during festive seasons.
In a statement today, Chong suggested that the State government could negotiate directly with airlines to secure more affordable ticket prices for residents.
“This can be done. The question is whether the Sarawak government cares to do it or otherwise,” he said.
He said that Sarawakians still have to pay through their noses for flights between Sarawak and West Malaysia.
He claimed that with the school holidays approaching, once again, a one-way economy seat flight to Kuala Lumpur can cost up to a thousand ringgit.
“Though one may say that these high flight ticket prices only coincide with holidays and festive seasons, but in Malaysia, these holidays and festive seasons are numerous and most Sarawakians are only able to travel during these holidays and festive seasons.
“Since the State government has the financial resources to operate an airline with the promise of offering cheaper air tickets to Sarawakians, can’t the State government, before operating an airline, flex its muscle for the benefits of the common Sarawakians to get cheaper flight ticket prices for us ordinary Sarawakians?” he asked. — DayakDaily
