KUCHING, June 19: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen has congratulated Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar on the latter’s appointment as the Dewan Negara Speaker.
He said Wan Junaidi has experience in the workings of Parliament and is committed to parliamentary reforms.
“With his appointment as the president of Senate, he would be able to work together with the Lower House Speaker and carry out reforms of the Parliament.
“In fact, one of the reforms which is in the pipeline is the setting up of special select committees overseeing the operations of most of the important ministries like Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) and Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS).
“By setting up these special select committees, it is a way in empowering the legislative in their role to provide check and balance on the executive body,” he said at a press conference at Sarawak DAP headquarters here today.
Chong who is also Stampin MP further said that he believed Wan Junaidi could push forward more reforms and empower the legislative to provide a more balanced system within the three arms of government. — DayakDaily
