DARO, Jan 12: Rural Sarawak residents can now enjoy Internet access at just RM20 per month, down from RM70, thanks to the Sarawak government’s upgraded Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN).

The initiative, launched today by Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, aims to accelerate digital transformation and improve connectivity in remote areas, with the remaining cost subsidised by the government.

“This enhanced version of MySRBN has received overwhelming response, with registrations increasing to 431 members in a short period, and the number continues to grow.

“The program leverages smart towers developed by the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) in collaboration with various entities, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to ensure that MySRBN services are also available on Jendela towers in the future,” Julaihi said during a press conference following the launch of the new MySRBN coverage in Pulau Bruit broadcast live by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

He further explained that the Sarawak government has allocated RM2.3 billion to develop the telecommunication programme, including the construction of 618 towers across the State, with an additional 18 towers planned to extend coverage to remote areas.

Beyond improving communication, MySRBN aims to boost rural participation in the digital economy, particularly in online businesses.

“Local products such as sos unjur and Belawai songket can now be marketed more widely through digital transactions, opening up more opportunities for SMEs in Sarawak to grow and reach broader markets,” he added.

Julaihi emphasised the Sarawak government’s commitment to ensuring that all residents, including those in rural areas, benefit from digital development, bringing the State closer to its goal of becoming a high-income region by 2030.

Among those present at the event were Sarawak Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi; Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information & UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol; Tanjung Manis MP, Yusuf Abdul Wahab; Igan MP, Ahmad Johnie Zawawi; SDEC chief executive officer Dato Sudarmoto Osman; Mukah Division Resident, Datu Kueh Lei Poh; MCMC Sarawak Director, Adiman Ajem; and other distinguished guests. – DayakDaily
