BINTULU, July 25: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Sarawak has successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle 42.13 kilogrammes of ecstasy pills in two separate operations in the district, marking the second-largest drug seizure in Sarawak, following a similar case in Miri previously.

In a TVS news report, Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya said the first seizure involved 25.33 kilogrammes of ecstasy pills worth RM4.23 million, discovered in a courier package at a delivery company in Bintulu on July 4.

“The second seizure was made during a raid at a house along Jalan Tun Hussein Onn, which led to the discovery of an additional 16.8 kilogrammes of ecstasy valued at RM2.805 million, as well as RM117,600 in cash,” he said at a press conference here today.

He added that two local individuals, a man and a woman, were arrested during the raid to assist with investigations.

“The total amount of drugs seized in both operations stands at 42.13 kilogrammes. Previously, we confiscated around 60 kilogrammes of ecstasy in Miri, making this the second-largest drug seizure in Sarawak to date,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.

Norizan affirmed that JKDM Sarawak remains committed to intensifying enforcement and intelligence efforts to dismantle drug smuggling networks that are using Sarawak as a transit and distribution hub. — DayakDaily
