KUCHING, July 18: Sarawak’s crime index decreased by 19 per cent over the period of January until June 2022, reveals Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri.
According to Mohd Azman, during this period, only 1,910 cases were recorded compared to 2,357 cases during the corresponding period last year.
“Generally, the crime situation in Sarawak is under control,” he told reporters during a press conference held after attending the Sarawak Police Commissioner’s Monthly Assembly here today.
Mohd Azman said the decrease in number of crime cases were recorded in 15 districts, namely Kuching (-193 cases), Miri (-150), Padawan (-54), Sibu (-24), Mukah (-23), Betong (-18), Meradong (-18), Lundu (-17), Kota Samarahan (-13), Sri Aman (-13), Marudi (-11), Saratok (-10), Belaga (-7) and Limbang (-6).
At the same time, he added, thirteen districts showed an increase in number of cases, namely Bintulu (26), Serian (18), Sarikei (17), Simunjan (10), Bau (8), Julau (8), Tatau (7), Lawas (5), Kapit (4), Kanowit (3), Song (3), Dalat (2), including in Matu/Daro (1).
By category, Mohd Azman revealed, violent crime recorded a 9 per cent decrease in cases for the period of Jan until June with only 290 cases reported compared to 318 cases for the same period last year.
He said crime cases involving property also show a 21 per cent decrease with 1,620 cases reported from Jan until June this year, compared to 2,039 cases last year.
“However, crime cases involving rape and unarmed robbery increased with three and six cases respectively, including crime cases involving vans, lorries and heavy vehicles (1), cars (92) and motorcycle theft (36),” he said. — DayakDaily
