KUCHING, March 5: Sarawak could learn vertical farming from Singapore, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Describing vertical farming as an impressive innovation, he said it will make agriculture trendy and attractive, especially to the new breed of young educated farmers in urban areas.

“We want to encourage more young people to take up modern agriculture as their profession so that we can increase our production of food and food products,” he said after receiving a courtesy call from Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon at the former’s office yesterday (March 4), according to a statement.

Uggah also mentioned that as Sarawak focuses on its target of increasing self-sufficiency level (SSL) for rice production to 60 per cent by 2030, it looks forward to using technological solutions like drones to do the spraying of fertiliser and pesticides besides general monitoring.

“Thus, there is the need to use high yielding hybrid seeds and mechanical harvesters.

“When rice farmers can harvest more, their income too will increase,” he added. — DayakDaily
