KUCHING, June 13: The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has expressed interest in collaborating with Sarawak on a conservation and rehabilitation plan for a former sand and gravel mining site in the state.

This interest follows a benchmark visit by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and his delegation to TRCA on June 12.

During the visit, TRCA was impressed with Sarawak’s proposed plans for the site. TRCA’s responsibility includes the conservation and rehabilitation of ecosystems to protect and restore the watersheds of Toronto, using an integrated approach that involves implementing low-impact development projects such as conservation parks and recreational facilities through public-private partnerships.

Since its establishment in 1957, TRCA has been proactive in enhancing Ontario’s natural environment and protecting land, water, and communities from flooding and increasingly extreme weather events under the provincial Conservation Authorities Act.

The Sarawak delegation, led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, included Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Syed Aman Ghazali, and other senior government officials.

This collaboration is expected to bring significant expertise and innovative approaches to the conservation and rehabilitation efforts in Sarawak, leveraging TRCA’s extensive experience in ecosystem management and sustainable development. — DayakDaily
