KUCHING, April 19: The upcoming Sarawak Cancer Centre, once completed, could become the top oncology facility in Malaysia, says Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He lauded the Sarawak government’s initiative in advancing the construction of the new cancer hospital in Kuching, noting how the State agreed to fund the RM1 billion project upfront to fast-track its implementation—with the federal government set to reimburse the amount later.
“The cancer hospital in Kuching is a good proposal, and the federal government is supposed to allocate RM1 billion for it.
“But after a proper discussion with the Sarawak government, they said it’s okay—Sarawak will advance the RM1 billion and carry out the project first, and the federal government will reimburse it later. That’s why I said it must be expedited,” he said during the Aidilfitri Madani 2025 event held at the Indoor Stadium, Petra Jaya, here today.
He also shared that the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, was keen to expand the project further, but Anwar advised him to prioritise completing the existing plan first and to proceed swiftly.
“So at the very least, when we have a cancer hospital, which one is the main one in the whole of Malaysia? The number one will be in Kuching. That is a contribution to the nation.
“If you ask which is the best cancer hospital in the country—InsyaAllah, it will be in Kuching in the next few years,” he added.
