KUCHING, Jan 31: Sarawakians, especially those in flood-affected areas, are urged to stay alert as the highest king tide is expected tonight, potentially worsening existing flood conditions.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that while reports from Bintulu indicate receding water levels, authorities remain on high alert for any unexpected developments.

“Tonight, we are expecting the highest king tide, so we must remain vigilant.

“The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has activated its response teams at the division and district levels, with additional temporary evacuation centres (PPS) on standby if needed,” he said during a press conference at Serian Community Hall today. A recording of the press conference was later made available to the media.

He also assured that food supplies are sufficient to support those affected.

According to the Sarawak Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), a king tide of up to 6.1 metres is expected to hit at 6.49pm today.

A similar 6.1m king tide is also forecast for Feb 1 at 7.24pm. – DayakDaily
