Sarawak boxing chief Rahman Lariwoo dies at 67, athletes vow to honour his legacy

KUCHING, Aug 15: Sarawak Amateur Boxing Association (SABA) president Dato Rahman Lariwoo passed away this morning at the age of 67, leaving behind a legacy that helped shape the State’s boxing landscape and inspiring Sarawak athletes to continue competing in his honour at the 2026 Selangor Malaysia Games (Sukma).

The matter was confirmed by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, who is the younger brother of the late Rahman.

Sarawak Assistant Chef de Mission (ACDM) for boxing, Royston Valentine, described Rahman’s passing as a significant loss to the Sarawak boxing fraternity.

“Despite our grief, I am confident that our athletes will continue to fight with determination as a symbol of respect and appreciation for the late Rahman’s immense contributions to boxing.

“I extend my condolences to his family,” he told TVS today.

Royston said Sarawak’s boxing contingent would carry on their campaign at Sukma Selangor 2026 as a tribute to Rahman’s dedication and contributions to the development of boxing in the state.

The late Rahman, who also served as president of the Malaysian Professional Boxing Association, was regarded as one of the key figures behind the growth and progress of boxing in Sarawak.

He was understood to have been scheduled to travel to Selangor to lend his support to the Sarawak contingent competing at the Games.

The boxing competition will be held from tomorrow until Aug 23 at Dewan Tun Abdullah Mohamad Salleh (DTAMS), National University of Malaysia (UKM), Bangi.

Sarawak has fielded 11 athletes across 11 categories: men’s bantamweight (51kg–54kg), men’s featherweight (54kg–57kg), women’s featherweight (52kg–57kg), men’s flyweight (48kg–51kg), women’s flyweight (48kg–52kg), men’s light middleweight (67kg–71kg), men’s light welterweight (60kg–63.5kg), men’s lightweight (57kg–60kg), men’s middleweight (71kg–75kg), women’s minimumweight (45kg–48kg) and men’s welterweight (63.5kg–67kg). — DayakDaily
