KUCHING, April 10: A child who was previously stateless and granted Malaysian citizenship in 2024 has now successfully received the “K” indicator on his MyKad—a key development in the ongoing efforts to secure full State recognition for Sarawak-born children in similar situations.

In a statement today, Irene Chang, Director of Political Education for Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak, welcomed the update, calling it a “heartening” outcome after years of raising the issue with the relevant authorities.

“We had first highlighted this K-indicator issue in August 2021 after noticing that some children who had received Malaysian citizenship were issued identity cards without the K-indicator.

“This meant they couldn’t reside or work freely in Sarawak and were denied State benefits,” she said.

Chang further said that after nearly five years of engagement with ministries, positive progress has finally been made. Children granted citizenship under Article 15A can now apply to be officially recognised as “Anak Sarawak.”

She added that many of these formerly stateless individuals from Sarawak who were granted Malaysian citizenship are now working outside the State.

“This is a great blow to us, as we lose talented individuals who could have contributed to the State’s development.

“The K-indicator is a vital marker of Sarawakian status and rights under the Constitution,” she pointed out.

Chang encouraged all eligible individuals—especially those born in Sarawak, legally adopted, and granted citizenship under Article 15A—to check their MyKad.

“If the K is missing, they should visit the nearest JPN branch to apply,” she emphasised. — DayakDaily
