Sarawak aims to lead Southeast Asia’s esports scene with Sarawak Esports Expo as global platform

KUCHING, Dec 13: Sarawak is positioning itself as a premier esports hub in Southeast Asia with initiatives like the Sarawak Esports Expo (SAREX).

Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, underscored the transformative potential of esports, describing it as more than just entertainment but a powerful economic driver, educational platform, and unifying force.

“I have witnessed with pride how SAREX has grown into a beacon of opportunity and innovation. What began as a local initiative has evolved into a platform that attracts participants not only from across Sarawak and Malaysia but also from international teams in Southeast Asia,” he said during the officiation of SAREX 2024 at the MBKS Community Hall today.

His speech was delivered by Deputy Minister of Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan.

Abdul Karim highlighted that esports is a dynamic industry that empowers youth, drives technological advancements, and elevates Sarawak’s global profile.

He envisioned SAREX becoming one of the world’s most prestigious esports expos, integrated into the Sarawak’s tourism and creative industry strategies.

“The Ministry will work closely with the Sarawak Esports Association (SESA) to establish SAREX as an official annual event on Sarawak’s tourism calendar,” he said.

He also announced plans to increase the prize pool from RM80,000 to RM100,000 in 2025 to attract more international teams and sponsors.

Abdul Karim, who also serves as Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, expressed gratitude to the esports community, recognising their role as the driving force behind SAREX’s success.

“Your passion and dedication have shown that gaming is more than a pastime—it’s a bridge connecting people, cultures, and ideas,” he said.

He also thanked international participants for their involvement, noting that their presence reflects the unifying spirit of esports and reinforces Sarawak’s position as a global destination for gaming and innovation.

SESA president and SAREX 2024 organising chairman Afiq Fadhli Narawi echoed Abdul Karim’s vision.

“We aspire to make SAREX a globally recognised esports brand. This is just the beginning. Our dream is to make SAREX an iconic global esports event while showcasing Sarawak’s unique culture and technological advancements,” he said.

SAREX24, running from Dec 13 to 15, features a diverse line-up of tournaments, including PUBG Mobile (international), Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, eFootball, Tekken 8, and Factor2, with participants hailing from across Sarawak, Sabah, Peninsula Malaysia, and several countries from Southeast Asia.

In addition to the competitive events, attendees can get hands-on experience with the latest technologies, participate in workshops led by local and international experts, and explore Sarawak’s unique heritage through cultural showcases. — DayakDaily
