SAR underway for missing Sarikei man feared killed by crocodile

Mekam-Sare river, where the crocodile was spotted with a body of a man believed to be of the 77-year-old missing man.

SARIKEI, March 19: A Search and Rescue (SAR) operation was launched after a 77-year-old man from Rh Abak was reported to have fallen prey to a crocodile near the Mekam-Sare river.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in a statement disclosed it received a call informing about the incident at 12.20pm from Jakar Police Station, and a team of firefighters from Bomba Sarikei was deployed to the location.

“Based on our monitoring and information gathered from the operation officers at the location, we will deploy a boat for a SAR operation,” the statement revealed.


It was understood that the victim from Sungai Mekam, was reported as missing by his son after a villager found his father’s equipment near Mekam-Sare river, used to search for “umbut apong” (nipah palm shoot), but failed to locate his father.

Following that, search efforts were conducted by the local villagers, and the son was informed by the local villagers that that they saw a crocodile appearing in the middle of the river together with a human body, believed to be of the 77-year-old victim. — DayakDaily
