SAR mounted for missing ferry helmsman near Batang Lupar jetty

KUCHING, April 8: A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been mounted for a helmsman who was reported missing near the Batang Lupar Ferry jetty.

According to a report from the Sarawak Bomba operation centre today, they received a call regarding the incident at 4.35pm from Malaysian Emergency Rescue Services (EMRS) 999 and dispatched firefighters from the Saratok station.


Initial information received by the operation commander on the incident reported that the victim went down into the river with three other colleagues to release a rope that was stuck to the ferry’s propeller.

The victim was reported to have not reached the surface.

Following that, firefighters conducted a search operation, together with personnel from the Betong Civil Defence Force (APM), Malaysia Volunteers Corps Department (Rela), and the police, at the nearby riverbank about 500m from the ferry’s location. — DayakDaily
