KOTA SAMARAHAN, Dec 10: The spirit of multiculturalism and religious harmony was on full display as a huge crowd joined the Christmas parade and celebration in Samarahan on Sunday (Dec 8).
Marking the first event of its kind since the pandemic, the parade wove through the streets from St Francis Church to Farley Supermarket, bringing together participants and spectators in a jubilant display of unity and festive cheer.
Themed ‘Peace Be With You’, the event was organised by the Sarawak Association of Churches Samarahan Branch (ACSSB) and hosted by the Methodist Church.
With participation from 700 church members representing various denominations under the ACSSB, the parade also drew an estimated 800 enthusiastic spectators, creating a vibrant and inclusive celebration.
In a media release, the organisers highlighted the event’s dual purpose of spreading the message of Christmas joy and peace while fostering community cohesion and showcasing the harmonious coexistence of the diverse Samarahan community.
The celebration commenced with a worship service led by Reverend Steward Damat from the Sarawak Iban Annual Conference Methodist Church who shared a heartfelt sermon on the birth of Jesus Christ, emphasising how “His love is meant to transform lives and inspire hope across generations”.
Following the parade, festivities continued on the stage outside Farley Supermarket, transforming the area into a hub of Christmas cheer.
A dynamic programme featured captivating choir performances, vibrant dance shows, and a much-anticipated lucky draw.
Each activity was presented by different denominational churches under the ACSSB, reflecting the collective spirit and diversity of the Christian community.
The organisers expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support and participation, underscoring the event’s success in uniting people of different backgrounds.
They emphasised that the celebration went beyond religious observance, serving as a testament to the shared values of peace, love, and community harmony that define the Samarahan spirit. — DayakDaily
