KUCHING, July 11: After being held in a few districts since its first staging in Lawas on May 28, the 60th Sarawak Independence anniversary celebration will be hosted in Samarahan this July 14-18.
A press release today from the Samarahan Resident’s Office disclosed Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will once again lead the Sarawak Merdeka convoy from Serian to Samarahan this July 15.
“Various activities have been planned for residents within the Samarahan vicinity at The Summer Shopping Mall and throughout Samarahan, Asajaya, Sebuyau, Simunjan, Gedong, and Sadong Jaya,” it said.
On July 14, there will be the Sarawak Merdeka 60 Years Digital Exhibition, stalls selling various goods, Samarahan Kitchen, and a karaoke competition. Kota Samarahan MP and Malaysian Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Rubiah Wang, is expected to conduct the soft opening of the stalls and Samarahan Kitchen.
The following day (July 15) will feature ‘Aerobathon’, colouring event, e-sports, and Nopeng (traditional dance) competitions, as well as ‘Little Prince and Princess’ and Pentas Rakyat programames at The Summer Shopping Mall.
Later on the same day, at around 2pm, there will be a ceremony to welcome the Premier at the mall, where he will officiate at the digital exhibition and visit the stalls and Samarahan Kitchen.
There will also be a handover of the Sarawak flag from Serian Resident, Selamat Jati Yanjah, to acting Samarahan Resident, Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang.
Then, on July 16 at 10am, there will be a flag-off of the district-level convoy by Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is the Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister; Sarawak Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Minister; and assemblyman for Asajaya.
Other than at The Summer Shopping Mall, the district-level convoy will also stop at the Asajaya Sports Complex with the handover of the Sarawak flag to the residents. A colouring contest, the ‘Half Aerobathon Challenge’, and ‘Jom Memanah’ programme will also be held at Sadong Jaya.
In addition, a flag handover ceremony to the residents will be held at Masjid Baharu Sebuyau, followed by a visit to the Sebuyau Market.
The convoy will continue on July 17 throughout the Samarahan district (Samarahan, Simunjan, and Gedong) with the handover of the Sarawak flag to residents and a prize presentation ceremony to the winners of the ‘gasing’ competition in Simunjan.
On the final day (July 18), there will be a ‘Senam X-Tive’ programme in collaboration with public universities in the district at The Summer Shopping Mall, where there will be a handover of the flag to these institutions, followed by a visit to SK Pendidikan Khas and SMK Kota Samarahan.
The handover of the flag to the Kuching district convoy will then be held at La Promenade Mall. — DayakDaily
