SIBU, Aug 9: The Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) plans to develop a new headquarters complex in Petra Jaya to meet the growing need for recreational and sports facilities as well as event space.
According to Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development and Saberkas president Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the plan was prompted by a lack of facilities for sports activities and wedding functions in the surrounding area.
He said Saberkas was looking at a larger-scale facility as there was a need in Kuching for recreational facilities, particularly for sports and wedding functions.
“That is why we intend to have a new headquarters complex equipped with sports facilities that can also be used for wedding functions and so on,” he said when met at a welcoming dinner held in conjunction with the 18th Saberkas Sarawak Triennial General Meeting (TGM) here on Saturday (Aug 8), as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Abdul Karim, who is also Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, the organisation’s strong financial position would enable the project to be realised.
He added that a site in Petra Jaya had been identified, with further discussions to be held with the Land and Survey Department regarding the process of obtaining approval or land ownership from the Sarawak government.
He said the proposed complex was targeted to become an iconic building, considering that the youth organisation had now reached 53 years since its establishment.
However, he stressed that the proposal was still at an early stage, and detailed information on the design and cost would only be announced after obtaining approval from the State government.
“At this stage, we are still in the early phase, and we need to discuss it with the State government. Once the matter is agreed upon and finalised, only then can the project details and cost be shared with the public and media,” he said. — DayakDaily
