KUCHING, Dec 26: Sabati, the charitable association of wives of state ministers and assemblymen, has donated a state-of-the-art vitrectomy machine — for conducting delicate eye operations — to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

The Chief Minister’s wife, Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, handed over the machine in a simple ceremony at SGH on Dec 10.

Ophthalmology Department head Dr Intan Gudom said that the donation was timely in view of the alarming increase in the number of diabetic patients experiencing visual impairment.

The new machine, he added, would facilitate 300 to 400 vitreo-retinal surgeries per year, where local and visiting sub-specialty surgeons would conduct the operations for patients from throughout the state.

Other distinguished guests present at the ceremony were Sabati deputy presidents Datin Amar Doreen Mayang, Puan Sri Datin Amar Corrine Masing and Dato Dayang Morliah Awang Daud; honorary secretary Datin Dr Zalihah Abdullah as well as SGH director Dr Chin Zin Hing, deputy director (Medical) Dr Hayati Ja’afar and deputy director (Management) Norhidayagh Taufik. — DayakDaily
