KUCHING, April 2: Sabah and Sarawak teams could face higher travel costs for the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor due to rising tensions from the Middle East conflict.
Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the situation was being closely monitored.
“As it is, I am very happy to see that Malaysian oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz have been allowed through. Because of this, the price of fuel in Malaysia will probably remain manageable compared to other nations.
“We will continue to coordinate with the federal government, particularly the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to reduce any burden or pressure arising from the Middle East situation. We are actively looking into this,” he said during a press conference at Baitul Makmur 2 here today.
Abdul Karim also highlighted that preparations for the games are continuing smoothly.
“Overseas training is ongoing, including our Wushu team, which is currently in Tianjin, China,” he added.
At the same time, he noted that local infrastructure upgrades are progressing on schedule.
“The Sarawak Stadium is practically new—every seating area has been upgraded, and the contractor is working even at night. Only the site remains the same,” Karim said, adding that recent Middle East developments may affect material costs. – DayakDaily
