KUCHING, March 11: Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) is not convinced that amending Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution would give the state bright prospects in the long run.
S4S spokesperson Erick Chin in a statement today said the only way for Sarawak to have brighter prospects is for the state government to call for a Referendum Ordinance, and if the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government is truly sincere it would consider it.
“We praised a call to restore equal partnership of Sabah, Sarawak, and Malaya but with the attitude of the U-turn statement by the federal minister; it just a rhetoric statement,” he said.
Chin was responding to the statement by Minister of Law Liew Vui Keong made earlier this week that the Cabinet has agreed to amend Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution to restore the status of Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners with Peninsular Malaysia.
As such, Chin suggested that the only way to protect Sarawak’s sovereignty and rights would be to call for a Referendum Ordinance.
“This is important as it to proves the Pakatan Harapan federal government’s sincerity in these matters. Not only that, it will protect Sarawak’s sovereignty and rights,” he said.
He said the federal government has been reminded to make corrections on approximately 600 items with regards to Sarawak under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Chin also reminded Sarawakians about Sabah’s political turmoil in 1994 where the Chief Minister’s post rotation system was first introduced by Umno.
“But the system was abolished when Umno came in power.
“In other word, if PH wants to restore the equal partner status, who can guarantee that there will no be U-turn statement?” he questioned. — DayakDaily
