RWMF 2025: Earth, Wind & Fire lights up the rainforest with timeless groove and soul

KUCHING, June 22: Legendary guitarist and founding Earth, Wind & Fire member Al McKay lit up the Sarawak Cultural Village with his powerhouse ensemble last night, delivering a funk-filled, soul-charged finale that crowned Day 2 of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025.

Backed by a stellar lineup of musicians, the Earth, Wind & Fire Experience by Al McKay sent the crowd into a euphoric groove with iconic hits such as “Boogie Wonderland,” and “Let’s Groove.”

The electrifying set, which began around 10.30pm, bridged generations and genres, reminding festivalgoers why Earth, Wind & Fire remains one of the most enduring names in music.

Before the headliner, the evening concert lineup unfolded with a vibrant series of performances showcasing both global and local artistry, arranged in a captivating progression.

Thousands packed the festival grounds in eager anticipation of Earth, Wind & Fire Experience by Al McKay, with barely any space left between the sea of dancing festivalgoers at RWMF 2025.

Kicking off the “Magic Hour” segment at dusk was Naungan from Malaysia, followed by a riveting display of traditional samurai drumming by Seppuku Pistols from Japan.

Kulāiwi, the Hawaiian collective known for their rich harmonies, then enchanted the crowd, paving the way for Sarawak’s very own cultural icons—sape master Mathew Ngau Jau and Lan E Tuyang, a troupe preserving Orang Ulu music and storytelling traditions.

The energy surged with Buddha Beat ft. Sinaran Collective from Malaysia, infusing the stage with contemporary local rhythms before Rob Ruha of Aotearoa (New Zealand) captivated with his powerful vocals and Te Reo Māori compositions.

Kuntaw Mindanao from the Philippines then lifted spirits with their traditional martial arts-inspired percussion, building anticipation to the explosive finale by Al McKay’s EWF Experience.

Festivalgoers take a breather on the festival grounds as they wait for the next act during a short intermission on Day 2 of RWMF 2025.

Throughout the day, festivalgoers immersed themselves in RWMF’s immersive side programming—from Bidayuh bracelet-making and traditional tattooing to community drumming and dance workshops—celebrating Sarawak’s living heritage and global cultural exchanges.
