KUCHING, Oct 17: Police have arrested a 32-year-old local man believed to be involved in a road rage incident in which he allegedly threatened another driver and hurled an iron pipe at the victim’s vehicle at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho here yesterday (Oct 16).
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said police received a report from a 47-year-old man regarding the incident, which occurred around 8.16am at the road junction.
“Initial investigations revealed that the complainant, who was driving a Proton Juara, was blocked and cornered by another vehicle, a Datsun. The suspect then exited his vehicle angrily and tried to open the complainant’s car door but failed.
“He later threw an iron pipe towards the complainant’s vehicle and shouted, demanding the complainant to step out,” he said in a statement today.
Following intelligence gathering, a team from Kuching District Police Headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Division arrested the suspect at around 11.50pm the same day at a parking area along Jalan Keranji, Tabuan Desa.
“The suspect, who has seven previous criminal records related to theft and gambling, tested negative for drugs in a preliminary urine test,” Alexson added.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Section 427 for mischief causing damage, both of which carry a jail term of up to two years and a possible fine upon conviction.
Police obtained a four-day remand order for the suspect starting today (Oct 17) to assist in investigations.
Alexson advised the public to remain calm and courteous on the road, and to refrain from taking matters into their own hands, as such actions could endanger themselves and other road users.
He urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Kuching District Police Headquarters’ Operations Centre at 082-244444 or Investigating Officer Sgt Muhammad Shukor Eman at 017-4872632. – DayakDaily
