KUCHING, Aug 5: Motorists in Kuching are advised to expect temporary road closures and traffic diversions beginning Thursday (Aug 6) evening as a major religious procession celebrating the birthday of Deity Guan Ti Kung takes place in the city centre.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the procession will begin at 6pm and is expected to conclude at midnight, with approximately 120 contingents taking part in the event.
To ensure public safety and maintain smooth traffic flow, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD Kuching) will implement road closures and diversions in stages based on prevailing traffic conditions.
The procession will start at Lorong Ang Cheng Ho No. 7 and proceed through several major roads, including Jalan Petanak, Sri Aman roundabout, Jalan Central Timur, Jalan Ban Hock, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Bukit Mata, Jalan Lebuh Wayang, Jalan Wawasan, Lorong Carpenter, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Abell, Jalan Rumbia, Petanak roundabout, Lorong Blacksmith, before returning to Lorong Ang Cheng Ho.
Alexson said motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and make use of alternative routes to minimise delays during the event.
Vehicles travelling along Jalan Tabuan from the Simpang Tiga area are advised to use Jalan McDougall to avoid congestion around Jalan Lebuh Wayang and Jalan Wawasan. Those coming from Jalan Haji Taha should consider making a U-turn at Jalan Power to bypass traffic build-up on Jalan Gambir and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.
Meanwhile, road users travelling from Jalan Pending or Jalan Padungan are encouraged to use Jalan Sekama and Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim as alternative routes.
The police also urged the public not to park vehicles along road shoulders on roads affected by the procession, as improperly parked vehicles may obstruct traffic management efforts and compromise road safety.
“We seek the cooperation of all road users to comply with traffic instructions and plan their travel accordingly to reduce congestion caused by the temporary road closures and diversions,” Alexson said.
