KUCHING, Feb 21: Phase 2 of the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry project is scheduled to begin this year with an allocation of RM8 million, taking the next step in a long-term master plan to develop the 70-acre site into a mixed-use recreational and commercial hub by 2030.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the site includes about 20 acres of water body and more than 40 acres of adjacent land across the road. By comparison, the Batu Kawa Riverbank Waterfront covers only 13 acres.
“Phase 2 will include lighting, landscaping, and leisure facilities, creating a space where the community can enjoy recreational activities,” he told reporters after the Chinese New Year Open House and Community Gathering at Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multipurpose Hall today.
Dr Sim noted that the quarry’s lake is about eight storeys deep, which explains why it took two to three years for the water level to stabilise.
The new phase will also include food and leisure attractions similar to those at the Batu Kawa Riverbank Waterfront, but on a larger scale.
Looking ahead, the long-term master plan targets completion by 2030, with integrated developments such as a shopping centre and a one-stop service hub.
He emphasised that the project aims to balance development with public recreational spaces, ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of community well-being.
“High-density development is important, but people also need open spaces to relax and enjoy.
“This is just the beginning of Phase 2, and by 2030, the area will be fully developed according to our master plan,” he said. — DayakDaily
