KUCHING, Oct 21: Sarawak is implementing 108 rural road and bridge projects worth RM6.85 billion, with 18 completed, 39 under construction and another 51 still at tender or pre-contract stages making the total 90 for progress and planning.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the projects are being implemented by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW).

“To ensure that these projects are delivered effectively, my ministry will continue to monitor the contractor performance and take appropriate action where progress is unsatisfactory,” he said when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

He said enforcement measures could include issuing warnings, terminating contracts where necessary and appointing rescue contractors to complete projects affected by delays.

“Such measures are essential to strengthen accountability, safeguard public funds and minimise delays in delivering infrastructure to the people (rakyat),” he said.

The rural road and bridge projects are among the development works being implemented by JKR as they have been appointed as technical department to implement major projects under AP182, offering technical expertise and executing development projects assigned by federal agencies.—DayakDaily
