SIBU, April 17: Two culverts will be built in Lorong Kapor 3 and another in Lorong Oya 8 of Bukit Assek, known as a ‘dengue hotspot’ due to its poor drainage system.

According to Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, the project, worth RM50,000, is under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) and aims to eradicate mosquito breeding grounds.

The project, which will take about three months to complete, also includes crossovers for three houses from the road.

“Because of the collapse of these crossovers, it turns the back portion into a pond rather than the drain. As a result, the water cannot pass, which also causes dengue (as the mosquitoes will breed in stagnant water).

“That’s why we need to remove these collapsed crossovers and build a new culvert for them,” he said at the project handover ceremony to the contractor today.

He said he is using funds from his RTP for the project as the house owners could not afford to repair the collapse crossovers.

“I hope they (the contractor) can start and finish it earlier so that we can have a better living environment for the residents here,” he said. — DayakDaily
